How to use Grade Calculator

  1. 1For Final exam, enter your current grade, the grade you want for the course and how much the final is worth.
  2. 2Read the score you need on the final.
  3. 3For Weighted grade, list each category (homework, quizzes, midterm…) with your score and its weight.
  4. 4Click Use for final exam to carry your weighted grade over and see what you need on the final.

How much do you need on the final?

The last weeks of a term are much less stressful when you know exactly what's at stake. This grade calculator tells you the minimum score you need on your final exam to finish the course with the grade you want — or whether that target is still possible. It can also calculate your current grade from weighted categories such as homework, quizzes, projects and tests, and pass it straight to the final exam calculation.

Features

  • Final exam calculator: the score you need for any target grade.
  • Weighted grade calculator with any number of categories.
  • Partial terms handled — weights don't need to add up to 100% yet.
  • One click to use your weighted grade in the final exam calculation.
  • Clear messages when a target is out of reach or already secured.

Example

Category Score Weight
Homework 90% 20%
Quizzes 78% 20%
Midterm 84% 25%
Current grade 84.0% 65% counted

With the final worth the remaining 35%, reaching a course grade of 85% requires (85 − 84 × 0.65) ÷ 0.35 ≈ 86.9% on the final, while 80% only requires about 72.6%.

Study smarter

Knowing the number helps you plan: if you need 60% to pass, focus on the core topics; if you need 95% for an A, it may be worth asking about extra credit or retake options early. Talk to your teacher if a grade looks out of reach — there may be more ways to improve than the final.

Frequently asked questions

How is the required final exam score calculated?
Your course grade is a weighted average: final grade = current × (1 − w) + final exam × w, where w is the final's weight. Solving for the exam score gives (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. With a current 82%, a target of 85% and a final worth 30%: (85 − 82 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 92%.
What if the result is over 100%?
Then the target isn't reachable through the final alone, unless extra credit is available. Try a lower target to see what you can realistically achieve, and ask your teacher about other options.
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each category score by its weight, add them up and divide by the total weight. Homework 90% (20%), quizzes 78% (20%) and midterm 84% (25%) gives (18 + 15.6 + 21) ÷ 0.65 = 84%.
What if the weights don't add up to 100%?
That's normal before the term is over — the remaining weight is the work still to come. The calculator averages over the weights entered so far and shows how much weight is used.
Does it work with letter grades or points?
Enter percentages. If your class uses points, convert each score to a percentage first (points earned ÷ points possible × 100). To turn course grades into a GPA, use the GPA Calculator.
