How to use URL Slug Generator

  1. 1Paste one title per line into the left box.
  2. 2Choose hyphens or underscores, and whether to remove short stop words such as "the" and "of".
  3. 3Set a maximum length if your CMS or style guide needs one.
  4. 4Copy the slugs or download them as a text file.

Create clean URLs from titles

The URL of a page is one of the first things people and search engines see. A slug like /10-tips-for-better-sleep is easy to read, share and remember; /post.php?id=4815&ref=x%20y is not. This generator turns titles, product names or headings into clean slugs: lowercase, with hyphens between words, without accents, punctuation or other characters that break URLs. Paste one title or a whole list and get all the slugs at once.

Features

  • Bulk conversion: one title per line.
  • Accent removal and transliteration for European and Cyrillic text.
  • Hyphen or underscore separators.
  • Optional stop-word removal for shorter slugs.
  • Length limit that never cuts a word in half.
  • Unicode mode to keep non-Latin letters.

Slug best practices

  • Keep it short — three to six meaningful words is plenty.
  • Include the main keyword of the page.
  • Avoid dates if the content will be updated, so the URL stays relevant.
  • Don't change published slugs without a redirect, or you'll lose links and rankings.

Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?
The slug is the readable part of a URL that identifies a page, such as how-to-make-sourdough-bread in example.com/blog/how-to-make-sourdough-bread. Good slugs are short, lowercase and describe the page.
Hyphens or underscores?
Use hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators, while words joined by underscores may be read as one word. Underscores are still common in file names and some programming conventions.
What happens to accents and special characters?
Accents are removed (é → e, ü → u), special letters are spelled out (ß → ss, æ → ae), Cyrillic is transliterated (привет → privet), & becomes "and" and other punctuation is dropped.
Can I keep Chinese, Japanese or Arabic characters?
Yes — tick Keep non-Latin letters. Modern browsers and search engines handle Unicode URLs, though they are percent-encoded when shared, which makes them long. Many sites prefer transliterated or English slugs instead.
Should I remove stop words?
Removing words like "a", "the" and "of" makes slugs shorter without losing meaning, which is a common SEO practice. It's only applied when it leaves at least a few words.
