Calculate tips and split bills instantly

At the end of a meal, nobody wants to do mental arithmetic. This tip calculator gives you the tip amount, the total bill and each person's share as soon as you type. Pick a standard tip from 10% to 25% or enter any custom percentage, split the bill between any number of people and round everyone's share up to a whole number for easy cash payments. It works on your phone at the table and doesn't need an account or an app.

Features

  • Quick tip buttons for 10%, 12%, 15%, 18%, 20% and 25%, plus any custom percentage.
  • Bill splitting between any number of people, with + and − buttons for quick changes.
  • Round up per person so everyone pays a whole amount — the extra goes to the tip.
  • Tip per person to see how much of each share is gratuity.
  • Any currency — enter amounts in your local currency.
  • Works offline once the page is loaded; nothing is sent to a server.

Example

A dinner bill of 85.50 with an 18% tip comes to a tip of 15.39 and a total of 100.89. Split between three people, each pays 33.63. With rounding up, each person pays 34.00, the total becomes 102.00 and the tip rises to 16.50 (about 19.3%).

Tipping customs around the world

Tipping expectations vary widely, so it helps to know the norm before you travel:

  • United States and Canada — 15–20% at restaurants, around 15–20% for taxis and hairdressers, a dollar or two per drink at bars.
  • United Kingdom and Ireland — 10–12.5% where service isn't already included; check the bill for a service charge.
  • Continental Europe — service is usually included; rounding up or leaving 5–10% for good service is common.
  • Latin America — often 10%, sometimes added automatically as "propina" or "servicio".
  • Japan and South Korea — tipping is generally not expected and can even cause confusion.
  • Australia and New Zealand — not required; 10% for excellent service is appreciated.

These are general guidelines, not rules. Customs differ by region and type of venue.

Quick mental math

  • 10%: move the decimal point one place to the left.
  • 15%: take 10%, then add half of it.
  • 20%: take 10% and double it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage. For an 18% tip on 85.50: 85.50 × 0.18 = 15.39, so the total is 100.89. A quick mental shortcut for 20% is to move the decimal point one place left and double it: 10% of 85.50 is 8.55, so 20% is 17.10.
How much should I tip?
It depends on the country and the service. In the United States, 15–20% is customary at sit-down restaurants, with 18–20% common today. In Canada it's similar. In much of Europe, service is often included and people round up or leave 5–10%. In Japan and some other countries, tipping is uncommon. When in doubt, check local customs.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. Enter the subtotal if you want to tip before tax, or the full bill if you prefer.
How does rounding up work?
With Round up per person ticked, each person's share is rounded up to the next whole amount and the tip is increased by the difference. This makes paying in cash easier and never reduces the tip.
Can I split the bill unevenly?
The calculator splits the bill equally. For uneven splits, run the calculation separately for each person's items with the same tip percentage.
