Metric vs. imperial

The metric system (SI) is used officially by almost every country. It is decimal: each unit is 10, 100 or 1,000 times the next, so conversions within the system only move the decimal point. The imperial and US customary systems use historical units — 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, 16 ounces in a pound — and are still common in the United States and, for some purposes, the United Kingdom. Since 1959, imperial units have been defined exactly in metric terms, which is why conversions like 1 inch = 2.54 cm are exact.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate are the conversions?
Conversion factors use exact international definitions where they exist — for example 1 inch = 2.54 cm and 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg exactly. Results are shown to 10 significant figures, which is far more precise than everyday measurements need.
What is the difference between US and UK gallons?
A US gallon is 3.785 litres, while a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres — about 20% larger. Pints and fluid ounces also differ. Recipes and fuel figures from the UK and US are therefore not directly comparable; choose the right variant in the list.
Why are there both GB and GiB?
GB (gigabyte) is decimal: 1,000,000,000 bytes, used by storage manufacturers and network speeds. GiB (gibibyte) is binary: 1,073,741,824 bytes, which is what many operating systems actually count. That is why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GiB.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit by hand?
Multiply by 9/5 (1.8) and add 32. So 20 °C × 1.8 + 32 = 68 °F. To go back, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9.
How long is a month or a year in the time converter?
Because months and years vary in length, the converter uses averages from the Gregorian calendar — 1 year = 365.2425 days and 1 month = 1/12 of that (about 30.44 days). For exact dates, use the Date Difference Calculator.
Can I use a comma as the decimal separator?
Yes. You can type either 1.5 or 1,5.
