Celsius and Fahrenheit, both ways
Most of the world measures temperature in degrees Celsius, while the United States and a few other countries use Fahrenheit. Recipes, weather forecasts, thermostats, medical thermometers and science homework often need converting between the two. Type a value into either box and the other updates instantly — no need to choose a direction.
The formulas
| Conversion | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Celsius → Fahrenheit | °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 | 25 °C × 1.8 + 32 = 77 °F |
| Fahrenheit → Celsius | °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9 | (77 °F − 32) × 5/9 = 25 °C |
The two scales use different zero points — water freezes at 0 °C and 32 °F — and a different size of degree: 1 °C is 1.8 °F. That's why you can't simply multiply; you also have to shift by 32.
Useful reference temperatures
| What | Celsius | Fahrenheit |
|---|---|---|
| Water freezes | 0 °C | 32 °F |
| Cold winter day | −10 °C | 14 °F |
| Cool spring day | 15 °C | 59 °F |
| Room temperature | 20–22 °C | 68–72 °F |
| Hot summer day | 35 °C | 95 °F |
| Normal body temperature | 37 °C | 98.6 °F |
| Fever | 38 °C | 100.4 °F |
| Water boils (sea level) | 100 °C | 212 °F |
Oven temperatures
| Description | Celsius | Fahrenheit | Gas mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low / slow cooking | 150 °C | 300 °F | 2 |
| Moderate | 180 °C | 350 °F | 4 |
| Moderately hot | 200 °C | 400 °F | 6 |
| Hot | 220 °C | 425 °F | 7 |
| Very hot | 240 °C | 475 °F | 9 |
Recipes usually round oven temperatures, so 180 °C is written as 350 °F even though the exact value is 356 °F. For fan (convection) ovens, reduce the temperature by about 20 °C or 25 °F.
