How to use Zip Files

  1. 1Press Choose files or drop files onto the box. Use Add folder to include a whole folder with its structure.
  2. 2Remove any files you don't want, and add more if needed.
  3. 3Enter a name for the archive and choose a compression level.
  4. 4Press Create ZIP to build the archive and download it.

Create ZIP files online, privately

Sending ten separate attachments is clumsy. A ZIP file bundles them into one download, keeps folders organised and often makes documents much smaller. This tool creates ZIP archives directly in your browser: add files or an entire folder, choose a compression level and download the result. Nothing is uploaded, so it's fast and private, and it works on any device without installing software.

Features

  • Multiple files — select or drag in as many files as you like.
  • Whole folders with subfolders, keeping the original structure.
  • Three compression levels: no compression, normal and maximum.
  • Automatic renaming of duplicate file names so nothing is overwritten.
  • Custom archive name for the downloaded file.
  • Original modification dates are kept for each file.
  • Private — files are compressed on your device and never sent to a server.

How much smaller will my files get?

It depends entirely on the file type:

  • Text, CSV, JSON, HTML, code and logs — often 60–90% smaller.
  • Word, Excel and PowerPoint (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) — already ZIP-based internally, so only a little smaller.
  • PDF — usually a small reduction, depending on the content.
  • JPG, PNG, WebP, MP3, MP4 — already compressed; expect almost no change.

To make photos or PDFs smaller, compress them first with the Image Compressor or Compress PDF, then zip them to send as a single file.

Common uses

  • Email several documents as one attachment.
  • Share a project folder with code, images and documents.
  • Upload to forms that accept only one file.
  • Archive old documents in a single, organised file.
  • Back up a folder before making changes.

Opening ZIP files

Every major operating system can open ZIP files without extra software: double-click on Windows or macOS, or tap the file in the Files app on iPhone and Android. To look inside a ZIP and extract single files in the browser, use Unzip Files.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?
No. The ZIP archive is created by JavaScript in your browser, and the files never leave your device. That's safer for private documents and faster, because there's no upload.
Which compression level should I choose?
Normal is a good balance of size and speed for most files. Maximum squeezes out a few more percent for text, code and documents but takes longer. No compression (store) is fastest and is ideal for photos, videos, music and other files that are already compressed — zipping them again saves almost nothing.
Can I zip a folder and keep its structure?
Yes. Press Add folder and choose a folder. All files inside, including subfolders, are added with their relative paths, so the folder structure is recreated when the ZIP is extracted.
What happens if two files have the same name?
The second file is renamed automatically, for example photo (2).jpg, so no file overwrites another inside the archive.
Can I password-protect the ZIP file?
Not at the moment. ZIP encryption is not supported by this tool. To protect sensitive files, use a desktop tool such as 7-Zip with AES-256 encryption.
Is there a size limit?
There's no fixed limit, but all files are read into memory while the archive is built. Several hundred megabytes usually work on a computer; phones have less memory, so keep archives smaller there. Very large archives above 4 GB are not supported.
