A versatile random letter generator
Whether you are hosting a game night, designing a typography layout, or studying a new language, this random letter generator provides a fast and flexible way to draw characters on demand. Instead of relying on physical letter tiles or drawing from a hat, you can instantly pick a random letter A-Z with a single click.
Because the tool runs entirely in your web browser using local JavaScript, it is incredibly fast and completely private. Your settings and generated sequences are never uploaded to a server or stored in a database. You can generate thousands of characters offline without worrying about data usage or privacy.
Key features and customization
This tool goes far beyond a simple A-Z picker. It offers a suite of customization options to tailor the output exactly to your needs:
Multiple alphabets and scripts: While the standard Latin alphabet is the most common choice, you are not limited to it. You can generate a random alphabet sequence from Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Japanese (Hiragana and Katakana), or Korean (Hangul).
Targeted character sets: If you need specific types of letters, you can use the tool as a random vowel generator or restrict it entirely to consonants. This is particularly useful for linguistic exercises, cryptography puzzles, or custom word games.
Custom counts and uniqueness: Generate a single massive letter for a classroom display, or output a string of up to 1,000 characters for testing purposes. The "Unique" toggle ensures that no letter is drawn twice, which is perfect when you need to pick a random letter for a category game and want to avoid repeating previous rounds.
Letter case control: For alphabets that support it, you can force the output to be strictly uppercase, strictly lowercase, or a randomized mix of both.
Exclusion lists: Some letters are notoriously difficult to use in word games. The "Exclude" field lets you omit specific characters—like Q, X, Y, or Z—so they never appear in your generated results.
Common uses for random letters
Board games and party games Many popular tabletop and party games require players to name items in a category starting with a specific letter. Using this tool to pick a random letter keeps the game moving quickly and fairly. By using the exclusion feature, you can easily skip over letters that frustrate players, ensuring a fun and fast-paced game night.
Education and language learning Teachers and students can use the generator to practice foreign writing systems. By setting the alphabet to Cyrillic, Greek, or Hiragana, language learners can test their recall and pronunciation of random characters. It is an excellent digital alternative to physical flashcards.
Design and typography testing Graphic designers and web developers frequently need placeholder text to test font rendering, kerning, and line heights. Generating a block of mixed-case, random characters helps reveal how a typeface handles unusual letter combinations that standard "Lorem Ipsum" text might miss.
Creative writing prompts Writers facing a creative block can use a random letter a-z to spark ideas. Challenge yourself to write a paragraph where every word starts with the generated letter, or use the letter to determine the starting initial of a new character's name. If you need full names instead of just initials, you can also try our Random Name Picker.
How the randomizer works
The generator uses your browser's built-in pseudo-random number generator to ensure an unpredictable and even distribution of results. When you click generate, the tool first creates a "pool" of available characters based on your chosen alphabet. If you have typed any characters into the "Exclude" field, those are immediately removed from the pool.
If you have selected the "Unique" option, the tool removes each drawn letter from the pool so it cannot be selected again. In this mode, the maximum number of letters you can generate is naturally capped by the size of the remaining pool. If you allow duplicates, the tool simply picks randomly from the full pool for every single position, up to your requested count.
Finally, if your chosen alphabet supports casing (like Latin or Greek) and you have selected "Mixed," the tool performs an additional coin-flip for every single letter to determine whether it should be uppercase or lowercase.
