Add or remove sales tax and VAT

Whether you're pricing products, checking a receipt, writing an invoice or comparing prices across borders, you often need to know how much of a price is tax. This calculator works in both directions: add tax to a net price to get the total, or remove tax from a gross price to see the amount before tax and the tax itself. It works for US sales tax, European VAT, GST and any other percentage-based tax.

Features

  • Add tax to a pre-tax price.
  • Remove tax from a tax-inclusive price (reverse calculation).
  • Any rate, including decimals like 8.875%, with quick buttons for common rates.
  • Quantity for multiple identical items.
  • Any currency — enter amounts in your local currency.
  • Instant results with no sign-up.

Formulas

Calculation Formula Example (20%)
Tax on a net price net × rate 50 × 0.20 = 10
Total from net price net × (1 + rate) 50 × 1.20 = 60
Net from total total ÷ (1 + rate) 60 ÷ 1.20 = 50
Tax inside a total total − total ÷ (1 + rate) 60 − 50 = 10

Standard rates in selected countries

Country / region Tax Standard rate
United Kingdom VAT 20%
Germany VAT (MwSt.) 19%
France VAT (TVA) 20%
Spain VAT (IVA) 21%
Japan Consumption tax 10%
Australia GST 10%
Canada GST (+ provincial tax) 5% (13–15% HST in some provinces)
United States Sales tax 0–10%+, varies by state and city

Rates change from time to time and reduced rates apply to many goods such as food and books, so confirm the current rate before using it for invoices or accounting.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add sales tax to a price?
Multiply the price by the tax rate and add the result. For 100 at 8.25%: 100 × 0.0825 = 8.25 tax, so the total is 108.25. Equivalently, multiply by 1.0825.
How do I remove tax from a price that includes it?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. For 120 including 20% VAT: 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 before tax, and the VAT is 20. Simply taking 20% off 120 gives 96, which is wrong — a common mistake.
What's the difference between sales tax, VAT and GST?
All are taxes on purchases. US sales tax is usually added at the till and isn't included in shelf prices. VAT (Europe, UK and many other countries) and GST (Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore) are typically already included in consumer prices. The arithmetic is the same.
Which rate should I use?
Use the combined rate that applies where the sale happens. In the US this often includes state, county and city taxes, so it differs by location. VAT and GST have standard and reduced rates depending on the type of product. Check your local tax authority for the exact rate.
How is rounding handled?
Results are rounded to two decimal places. Shops and invoices may round per item or per line, so totals can differ by a cent from this calculation.
