Understanding exchange rates

An exchange rate tells you how much of one currency you get for one unit of another. If 1 USD = 0.92 EUR, then 100 USD buys 92 EUR, and 1 EUR costs about 1.087 USD. The mid-market rate shown here sits halfway between the price at which banks buy and sell a currency. It's the fairest benchmark, but consumers rarely get it exactly.

How to get a better rate when exchanging money

  • Compare the total cost, not just the advertised rate — some providers advertise "no fees" but use a poor rate.
  • Avoid airport and hotel exchange desks, which usually have the widest margins.
  • Pay in the local currency when a card terminal abroad offers to charge you in your home currency; the conversion offered at the till (dynamic currency conversion) is often expensive.
  • Use cards without foreign transaction fees or specialist money transfer services for large amounts.
  • Use this converter as a benchmark to see how far an offered rate is from the mid-market rate.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the exchange rates come from?
The rates are the euro foreign exchange reference rates published by the European Central Bank (ECB) via the Frankfurter API. The ECB updates them once every working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. Rates between two non-euro currencies are calculated through the euro.
Why is the rate different from my bank or card?
These are mid-market reference rates, halfway between buying and selling prices. Banks, card providers, airports and exchange offices add a margin or fees, so the rate you actually get is usually less favourable — sometimes by 3–5% or more.
How often are the rates updated?
Once per working day. Rates are not updated on weekends and ECB holidays, so on those days you see the most recent working day's rates. The date of the rates is shown under the result. This tool is not suitable for live trading.
Which currencies are supported?
About 30 major currencies covered by the ECB, including the US dollar, euro, British pound, Japanese yen, Chinese yuan, Swiss franc, Canadian and Australian dollars, Indian rupee, Brazilian real, Mexican peso and South Korean won. Some currencies, such as the Argentine peso or Russian ruble, are not included.
Is any of my data sent anywhere?
Your browser requests the current rate table from this site's own server, which caches it from the ECB data source. The amounts you enter and the currencies you choose are never sent; the conversion happens in your browser.
