How to use Webcam Test

  1. 1Click Start webcam test and allow camera access when your browser asks.
  2. 2Check the live preview. If you have more than one camera, choose it from the Camera list.
  3. 3Read the resolution, megapixels, frame rate and aspect ratio below the video.
  4. 4Toggle Mirror to see the unmirrored view others see, and click Take snapshot to save a still image.

Test your webcam online

Make sure your camera works and looks its best before a video call, interview, online class or stream. This webcam test shows a live preview as soon as you allow access, and reports what the browser really receives: resolution, megapixels, frame rate and aspect ratio. You can switch between cameras, compare mirrored and unmirrored views, and save a snapshot. The video never leaves your device.

What you can check

  • Does the camera work? A live picture confirms the camera, driver and permissions are fine.
  • Real resolution — for example 1280 × 720 (720p), 1920 × 1080 (1080p) or 3840 × 2160 (4K).
  • Frame rate, measured from the actual video frames received.
  • Multiple cameras — built-in, USB, virtual cameras, and front/rear cameras on phones.
  • Snapshot to examine sharpness, colour and lighting in a still image.

Common webcam problems and fixes

"Camera in use" or black screen. Only one app can usually use a camera at a time. Close video-calling apps, browser tabs with calls, and camera utilities, then reload.

Permission blocked. Click the camera icon or padlock in the address bar to allow access. On Windows, open Settings → Privacy & security → Camera; on macOS, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera, and enable your browser.

Laptop camera not detected. Many laptops have a camera on/off key or a sliding privacy shutter. Some business laptops also disable the camera in BIOS settings.

Grainy or dark image. Webcams have small sensors that need plenty of light. Face a window or place a lamp behind your screen, pointing at you. Avoid strong light behind you, which turns your face into a silhouette.

Low frame rate. Poor lighting, USB hubs and high resolutions can reduce frame rate. Plug the camera directly into the computer and improve lighting.

Getting a better picture

Position the camera at eye level, about an arm's length away. Keep the background tidy and avoid busy patterns. Clean the lens — a fingerprint smear makes everything look soft. If your camera supports it, use the manufacturer's software to fix focus and exposure instead of relying on automatic modes.

Test your audio setup too with the Mic Test and Speaker Test.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video recorded or sent anywhere?
No. The video is displayed directly from your camera in your browser and is never uploaded. Snapshots are created on your device and saved only if you download them.
Why is the preview black or not starting?
Another app (such as Zoom, Teams or your camera app) may be using the camera — close it and try again. Also check that the browser has permission in the address bar and in your operating system's privacy settings, and that any physical privacy shutter or camera key (often F8 or F10 on laptops) is open.
Why is the resolution lower than my camera's specification?
Browsers request the highest resolution the camera offers through the selected mode, but some cameras only deliver full resolution at lower frame rates, over USB 3.0, or in specific apps. Lighting and USB bandwidth also matter. The figure shown is what the browser actually receives.
What frame rate should a good webcam have?
30 frames per second is standard for video calls and looks smooth. 60 fps is better for streaming fast motion. In low light many webcams automatically drop to 15 fps to collect more light per frame — improve the lighting to raise it.
Why is my image mirrored?
Most apps show your own preview mirrored, like a bathroom mirror, because that feels natural. Other people see the unmirrored image. Untick Mirror to see what they see; text you hold up will then read correctly.
Does this work on phones?
Yes. On phones and tablets you can switch between the front and rear cameras with the Camera list.
